President Gerry McElvogue

Gerry, who has been a Rotarian for nine years, first served as president during 2011/12. When the veterinary surgeon moved to Banbridge, he felt “very much an outsider” and was keen to get involved in some way, in community life. Rotary offered him the forum to do just that. In his role as president, Gerry will lead the club in all its activities over the next 12 months. Speaking about his hopes for his term in office, he said: “My aim is to boost our membership by five new members, which will help to keep our club on track and enable us to continue our work to serve our community locally, and internationally, and have a lot of fun in the process! “Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) is an organisation of more than 51,000 men and women who, as members of over 1,800 Rotary clubs, volunteer their time, talents, professional skills and energy to improving the lives of people within their local communities and in those around the world.  “Internationally, we support disaster relief projects, education, literacy and water projects in the developing world.  “Locally, we support charities such as Newry Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, TinyLife and Angling First, based in Dromore.”The Banbridge club meets every Tuesday night at 6pm in the Belmont Hotel, and visitors are very welcome. The club also has a website where up-to-date information on events and activities can be viewed. The new president is encouraging the people of Banbridge to get behind the life-changing work of Rotary.“Please come along and support our events held in the community and, ultimately, come and join us as a Rotarian,” he said; “We would be very keen to hear from anyone interested in joining us.”Gerry is married to Ursula and they have twin daughters, Sarah and Catherine (14), who attend Our Lady’s Grammar School in Newry.
